Maxwell Institute Graduate School (MIGS)
Bayes Centre, Edinburgh
12:00-18:00, January 25, 2019
Learn about opportunities for PhD study in the mathematical sciences in the Maxwell Institute Graduate School, a collaboration of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities. We'll try to answer your questions - the why's, what's, how's of PhD study.
Meet staff and PhD students from both universities and hear about opportunities in a wide range of research areas.
Learn about ways that PhDs are funded at the two universities, about courses and research projects, as well as practical aspects of PhD study.
Visit the new Bayes Centre, where first-year MIGS PhD students enjoy a state-of-the-art office, the central base of operations for graduate studies.
Who it's right for: final-year undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences and related fields.
What's involved: short lectures will be given on various aspects, including funding options, structure of the programme, coursework, research projects, choosing supervisors, and other matters. Students will have chances to discuss with PhD students currently in the programme as well as academic staff. The Open Day is conducted in the space around the students' office where they work during their first year, at the new Bayes Centre in downtown Edinburgh. A buffet lunch will be provided at the start of the day and refreshments will be served.
