Not only are highly skilled PhD graduates in mathematical analysis greatly valued in industry and business, research in analysis and its applications is vital to the UK economy.

Since many of our students will take up careers in industry and commerce, fostering collaboration with industry and introducing students to the utilisation of mathematics within industry is a critical component of the MIGSAA PhD experience.

Our initial industrial supporters include Leonardo (formerly Selex ES UK), dstl, Microsoft Inria, John Deere and we are now in contact with over 16 different companies ranging from the financial sector through to brewing. Our industrial partners propose a range of different projects for students to work on- these might be small mini-projects for group work, extended projects or full PhD projects. Students working on PhD projects with a significant input from industrial partners can expect a good deal of interaction with those partners and significant exposure to the industrial environment at this stage. In addition there is the possibility of industrial placements during the PhD.

We will host regular industrial afternoons to foster connections and MIGSAA students will all be invited to participate in site visits at Selex to learn more about the role of mathematics in industry.

Candidates interested in the MIGSAA Industry Stream

Students on this stream of MIGSAA are admitted to work on a pre-arranged project in collaboration with industry or a non-university body. The studentship is fully-funded for 4 years, usually by the external partner. Students follow the same programme of mathematical and generic skills training as the other MIGSAA students during their first and later years, and are based together with the rest of the MIGSAA cohort.

Work on the project itself usually starts in the Spring of the first year at the same time as the projects for the other students. The main differences are that the main project topic and supervisory team are fixed form the start, and the project includes work with the external partners. This provides a very valuable experience for future careers.
