A MIGSAA short course in Nonlinear Analysis by John Ball (Oxford)

John Ball will deliver a series of 16 lectures on Nonlinear Analysis in April and May.  Note the different times and venues for the dates.

Lecture Content: Energy minimisation and the Second Law of Thermodynamics (examples: Nonlinear elasticity, liquid crystals..) (2 lectures) Review of the one-dimensional calculus of variations, including non-existence of minimisers, weak and strong local minimisers, and the Lavrentiev phenomenon. The multi-dimensional calculus of variations: Existence of minimisers by the direct method. Necessary and sufficient conditions for weak lower semicontinuity. Quasiconvexity, rank-one convexity and polyconvexity. Null Lagrangians. Survey of Young measures, relaxation and quasiconvexification, regularity and partial regularity, and local minimisers. (10 lectures) Lyapunov functions, approach to equilibrium, stability of equilibria, attractors. (4 lectures)
